Methamphetamine Is Focus of Hearing
Rep. Steve Kuykendall (R-Rancho Palos Verdes) and the House subcommittee on crime held congressional hearings Thursday at the Redondo Beach Public Library on the spread of methamphetamine trafficking, production and addiction in Los Angeles County.
Doctors, addicts and drug experts told committee members about their experiences with methamphetamine during a two-hour meeting convened by Mayor Greg Hill, who invited the subcommittee to Redondo because he said he believes methamphetamine is a growing problem in the South Bay.
“There are more labs out there every day,” said Redondo Beach Police Lt. John Skipper.
“Clearly, Southern California is the methamphetamine capital of the world.”
“The theme that was brought forward is that this problem is much more serious than anyone realized, and there’s not going to be one simple solution in dealing with it,” Hill said. “We’ve got to get at the root of the problem.”
He added that he hopes the hearings will convince government officials to appropriate more money to fight the spread of methamphetamine use in Southern California.
