Lightweight Bout at Calabasas Pits Reyes, Ramirez

Lightweights Rolando Reyes of Oxnard and Ralph Ramirez of San Diego will fight in an eight-round main boxing event May 2 at Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas.

Reyes, 5-0 with two knockouts, is a product of La Colonia Youth Boxing Club in Oxnard and is a former sparring partner of Fernando Vargas, IBF junior-middleweight champion.

Reyes also sparred with former IBF junior-lightweight champion Robert Garcia.

Ramirez (4-2) formerly sparred with Oba Carr.

Also scheduled are heavyweights James Muniz of Riverside and Ivy Calvin of Los Angeles squaring off in their professional debuts. Muniz is the nephew of 1968 U.S. Olympian and former welterweight contender Armando Muniz.

The card is expected to have six fights, including a women’s bout. Tickets are $30 for ringside, $20 for general admission. Information: (818) 222-6062.

TENNIS

* No. 7-seeded Philip Sheng of Thousand Oaks High and Chad Harris of Aurora, Colo., upset third-seeded Ytai Abougzir of Boca Raton, Fla., and Jesse Witten of Naples, Fla., 6-4, 6-3, in a boys’ 18 division doubles quarterfinal Thursday in the Easter Bowl Junior Championships at Riviera Resort and Racquet Club in Palm Springs.

Sheng and Harris will face top-seeded Tres Davis of Austin, Texas, and Robby Ginepri of Marietta, Ga., in the semifinals today. Davis and Ginepri beat Ryan Heinberg of Agoura Hills and Amir Mirandy of Woodland Hills, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), in a quarterfinal.

Lester Cook of Calabasas and Derrick Bauer of Marina del Rey, the No. 3-seeded team in boys’ 16 doubles, defeated Eric Hodgman of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Stephen Rozek of Chardon, Ohio, 6-2, 6-3.

Elizabeth Lumpkin of Naperville, Ill., and Bryce Marable of Darien, Ill. defeated Celia Durkin of Woodland Hils and Tracy Lin of Anaheim, 6-1, 6-4, in a girls’ 14 semifinal.

In the round of 16 Wednesday, Abougzir and Witten defeated cousins Prakash Amritraj of Harvard-Westlake High and Stephen Amritraj of Crespi High, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and Jeff Kazarian and Scott Spencer, both of Rolling Hills Estates, beat Nick Weiss of Calabasas and Jason Pongsrikul of San Diego, 6-1, 6-1.

FOOTBALL

* Bert Esposito, former coach at Linfield School in Temecula, has been hired as coach at L.A. Baptist High.

Esposito replaces Mark Bates, who accepted an assistant position at Oaks Christian.

Esposito was coach at Southern California Christian for four years before moving to Linfield. His career record is 59-39-4.

BASKETBALL

* The Hollywood Knights celebrity team, comprised of television, motion picture and recording stars, will play against the Glendale High faculty at 7 p.m. Saturday at Glendale High.

Proceeds from the event will go to Glendale High. The Knights celebrity team has participated in fund-raisers for more than 23 years.

Stars confirmed for Saturday include rapper Coolio, television stars Alfonso Ribeiro of “In the House” and Jose Solano and Michael Bergin of “Baywatch.”
