Derrick Anderson, a former Crenshaw High School star expected to be a key member of Pepperdine University’s basketball team next fall, was wounded by gunfire early Saturday in southwest Los Angeles, police said.

Anderson, 21, was a passenger in a car near West 39th and South Gramercy places about 12:20 a.m., when a gray, 1970s Chevrolet Camaro drove alongside, police said. Anderson got out of the car he was in and was struck in the arm and chest by gunfire from the Camaro.

He was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he is in stable condition. The wounds are not believed to be life-threatening. He transferred to Pepperdine last year from the University of Nevada at Reno, and was to become eligible to play on the Malibu school’s Western Athletic Conference championship team in the fall.
