The 13-year-old son of actor Pierce Brosnan was seriously hurt early Saturday in what police suspect was a drunk-driving accident on a steep mountain road, authorities said..

Sean Brosnan suffered multiple fractures and spinal injuries when the car in which he was riding plunged 150 to 200 feet over the embankment of a winding private road, said Officer Frank Sansone of the California Highway Patrol. The incident occurred just east of Kanan Dume Road about 3:45 a.m.

The driver, James P. Hall, 19, of Malibu, identified by authorities as Sean’s cousin, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. Hall and four other passengers suffered minor injuries, Sansone said.

Hall told investigators that he was driving about 30 mph on Dume Canyon Mountain Way when he swerved to avoid a large rock, Sansone said.

The other four passengers were identified as Malibu residents Anthony Hall, the 16-year-old brother of the driver; Cory Escobar, 19; Morgan Meyer, 20; and Robert Laird, 18, of England.

Several of the passengers were ejected, indicating they were not wearing seat belts, Sansone said.

County firefighters removed Sean and Anthony from the scene using a basket and ropes.

Pierce Brosnan, the star of several James Bond movies, rushed to the accident scene from his Malibu home and accompanied his son by helicopter to UCLA Medical Center, according to CHP officials.

CHP Officer Karen Faciane said the youth was in serious condition.
