Campbell to Resign From City Council

Longtime Councilman Roger Campbell said Monday he will not run for reelection in November, signaling a major change ahead for the five-member council.

Campbell, 49, plans to make the announcement at tonight’s City Council meeting. With his departure, three council seats will be open in the fall election.

“I think four terms is long enough and would like someone else to have the chance to serve,” said Campbell, an auto mechanic. “I want to be a regular citizen.”

His decision follows Mayor Pro Tem Mike McMahan’s midterm resignation, which goes into effect this week. McMahan could no longer serve on the council because he and his wife are moving to Piru. Councilman Scott Lee has previously said he would not run again.

Additionally, Mayor Evaristo Barajas faces reelection.

The turnover will leave Fillmore without a majority of experienced leaders, something Campbell would prefer to avoid. In hopes of stabilizing the council for now, Campbell plans to suggest that former Councilwoman Linda Brewster serve the rest of McMahan’s term.

“She’s the person that needs to be on there,” Campbell said. “I hope the council agrees with me and appoints her.”
