Santa Ana USD OKs Science Magnet, One of 13 Schools to Be Constructed
Santa Ana Unified officials said Tuesday the district plans to build Orange County’s first fundamental high school for science and technology. Made possible by the passage of a $145 million bond issue in November, the magnet high school would be one of 13 schools to be built across the city.
How the fundamental school concept would work at the high school level was not explained.
Santa Ana has one of the most crowded school districts in the state. It averages 3,000 students per 25 acres, while the state average is 1,660 per 40 acres. There are more children in portable classrooms in Santa Ana than the entire student population of Irvine.
The new school would be near the Discovery Science Center, district officials said.
