Earth Week Events Continue at CSUN
A Cal State Northridge geography professor will talk about lowering levels of asthma-inducing ozone in Southern California during an address today sponsored by the campus Geography Council.
The talk by Gong-Yuh Lin is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Union’s Santa Clarita Room and is part of a series of events celebrating “Recycle for Earth Week 2000.” The events, which began Monday and end Saturday, have included a concert and fund-raising drive for Habitat for Humanity.
“What we’re hoping to do is educate our campus community as to ways they can help to improve our environment, so they can go out and get involved in environmental issues,” said Cyndi Signett, who coordinates CSUN’s Associated Students Recycling Program. “Earth Day may be over, but we want to continue our celebration of Earth Day this week with the recycling event.”
Organizers urged students to recycle old records, files and documents. Recycling bins have been placed across campus, Signett said.
Hazardous waste will be collected from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today through Saturday in Parking Lot T. Acceptable items include motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides and paint. Items such as tires, ammunition and biological waste cannot be taken, organizers said.
Since 1991, CSUN students have recycled more than 500,000 pounds of aluminum cans and paper, Signett said.
