The game had a little bit of everything, including Jaret Wright taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning.

Kenny Lofton and Omar Vizquel made dazzling plays in the field. Manny Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez hit long home runs.

And the Cleveland Indians defeated the Seattle Mariners, 5-3, on run-scoring singles by Einar Diaz and Jacob Cruz with two outs in the 10th inning Wednesday at Seattle.

“I saw it on the board,” said Wright, whose no-hit bid was ruined by Stan Javier’s leadoff single in the seventh. “Hopefully, one of these days I’ll be right there next to my dad [Clyde] in the history book.”

Wright was bidding to become part of the first father-son pair to pitch no-hitters.

“That was a heck of a game,” Cleveland Manager Charlie Manuel said. “That was good, old-fashioned baseball. There was everything except a fight.”

The Mariners tied it, 3-3, in the ninth on Jay Buhner’s RBI single off Paul Shuey (1-0). Seattle then loaded the bases with one out, but pinch-runner Carlos Hernandez was caught in a suicide squeeze attempt and David Bell struck out to end the inning.

New York 2, Minnesota 0--Derek Jeter broke a scoreless tie with a sixth-inning homer and Tino Martinez added another solo shot two outs later as the Yankees defeated the visiting Twins for their second win in six games.

Jeff Nelson (4-0), the second of four Yankees pitchers, pitched 1 2/3 innings and was credited with the win in relief of Andy Pettitte, who made his first start since coming off the disabled list with a mild back strain.

Boston 14, Texas 4--Nomar Garciaparra had three hits, including a home run, to extend his hitting streak to 13 games as the Red Sox routed the Rangers at Arlington, Texas.

Garciaparra’s RBI double provided Boston’s first run and was part of a five-run first-inning outburst after Texas starter Mark Clark (2-2) got the first two outs.

Chicago 11, Baltimore 6--Frank Thomas, at first base instead of the designated hitter spot for the first time since April 9, hit a grand slam to lead the White Sox over the Orioles at Chicago.

Thomas’ big homer overshadowed Harold Baines’ 2,800th hit. Baines, who played for the White Sox for almost 12 years and already has his number retired by the club, reached the milestone with a solo home run in the third.

Toronto 4, Oakland 2--Chris Carpenter pitched 7 1/3 strong innings and Carlos Delgado homered as the Blue Jays defeated the Athletics at Oakland.

Carpenter (2-3) gave up Jason Giambi’s two-run homer in the first inning but recovered to shut down the A’s the rest of the way. He gave up five hits in winning his second consecutive decision.

Kansas City 7, Tampa Bay 6--Jermaine Dye hit a grand slam and a solo homer, and Mark Quinn had an RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning to lead the Royals at Kansas City, Mo.
