Street Drain Cleanup Planned for Summer

Share

More than 10,000 street drains will be cleaned in the West Valley and Westlake Village beginning this summer, county officials said this week.

The work is part of a program to clear debris, such as cigarette butts and plastic cups, from drains, enabling the county’s flood control system to function properly and help protect water quality.

“To operate the flood control system the way it was designed, it has to be properly maintained,” said Donna Guyovich, a spokeswoman for the county Department of Public Works. “A lot of trash filters down into the drains, and they have to be cleaned before the first rains.”

The West Valley project, scheduled to start in July, will take place in Agoura Hills, Canoga Park, Chatsworth, Encino, Hidden Hills, Mission Hills, Northridge, Panorama City, Reseda, Sylmar and parts of Calabasas and San Fernando.

The department is taking bids on the project until May 16. Guyovich said last year’s efforts cost more than $100,000. The operation is projected to be finished in September.

A similar project will be done concurrently in the Sherman Oaks, Encino and Los Feliz neighborhoods at a cost of $85,000 to $110,000.
