Conserve Water, Agencies Ask South County Residents

Water agencies are asking South Orange County residents to conserve water while the region’s major supply pipeline is repaired from May 2 to 16.

The Allen-McColloch Pipeline, which runs from Yorba Linda to Lake Forest, supplies much of South County with water from the Colorado River and Northern California. The 26-mile pipeline ruptured in December near Portola Parkway in Irvine, disrupting service to more than 700,000 customers.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California plans to replace 18 sections of concrete pipe with welded steel pipe.

For the past month, the water district has coordinated with South County agencies to ensure that the region has enough water in reserve. Agencies also have been asking residents and businesses to reduce water use by watering lawns no more than twice a week, taking short showers and washing cars at car washes that use recycled water.

“We recognize that it’s time for warm weather and spring planting, but we need everyone to use water sparingly during this repair period,” said Karl Seckel, assistant general manager of the Municipal Water District of Orange County.
