IRVINE
One of Irvine’s largest villages is vigorously opposing a proposal to run an elevated light-rail system through the center of the community.
The Woodbridge Villages Assn. and many of the community’s 30,000 residents oppose a plan that calls for the Irvine section of a proposed countywide transit system called CenterLine to run along the San Diego Creek Channel, which bisects the village.
“There’s concern with parking, with noise, with visual appearance,” said Bob Figeira, executive director of the association. “The board of directors is opposed, and I’m pretty sure that 95% of the residents are opposed.”
The Irvine Transportation Authority is considering two routes for the system to run through the city--a route through Woodbridge and a line along the San Diego Freeway.
A proposal to run the tracks along the freeway median was killed last month when the authority learned the freeway would have to be changed.
In recent weeks, Woodbridge residents have flooded the council with e-mails and nearly 600 postcards urging the city not to run the railways through the village.
