Rho and Won Advance to Match-Play Showdown

Angela Rho of Fullerton advanced to the match-play portion of the U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur after shooting 75 Tuesday in the second round of stroke play at Pumpkin Ridge in North Plains, Ore.

Rho, who will attend Stanford in September, had a two-day total of 150 and qualified sixth, six shots behind medalist Erica Blasberg of Corona. Rho, who advanced to the third round of match play last year, will face Irvine’s Angela Won, who shot 78-82--160 in stroke play. The pair tees off in the first round today.

Defending champion Aree Wonglukiet of Bradenton, Fla., shot 71-76--147 and was second, tied with twin Naree.

Priscilla Park of Santa Ana shot 80-87--167 and did not make the 64-player match-play field.

In the U.S. Boys’ Junior, also at Pumpkin Ridge, Nico Bollini of Yorba Linda shot a second-round 85 for a two-day total of 159 and did not qualify for match play.

TAKING A MULLIGAN

Jamie Mulligan, head professional at Coyote Hills Golf Course, is leaving to take a similar position at Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, Southern California PGA spokesman Greg Flores said.

Assistant pro Trevor Baker also is leaving, going with Mulligan. Replacements have not been named.

GOING TO U.S. AMATEUR

Don Dubois of Coto de Caza and Jae Jang of Fullerton qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship by surviving a sectional qualifier Monday at Friendly Hills Country Club.

Dubois shot 73-69--142 and was medalist. Jang shot 72-72--144 and tied for second. Matt Schrieber of Laguna Niguel shot 76-69--145 and is an alternate. The U.S. Amateur is Aug. 21-27 at Baltusrol in Springfield, N.J.

LEE IN AJGA HUNT

Stella Lee of Irvine shot an opening-round 75 and is in second place, a stroke behind leader D’rae Ward of Weatherford, Texas, in the AJGA tournament at Horseshoe Bay Resort in Horseshoe Bay, Texas.
