Scott Feeling Not So Great

Damone Scott, former Cal State Northridge quarterback, had his Arena League 2 football season end abruptly this week when the Norfolk Nighthawks removed him as the starting quarterback and dropped him from their playoff roster.

Nighthawk owner Kenny Easley, former All-American and All-Pro safety for UCLA and Seattle Seahawks, told the Norfolk Daily Press that Scott was suspended because of “conduct detrimental to the team.”

Coach Deatrich Wise refused comment.

Scott, 31, told reporters the suspension and roster move were personal.

“I had no business not starting,” he said.

Scott, 6-2 and 215 pounds, began the season as a reserve but helped the team reach the playoffs after becoming the starter. Scott finished the regular season as the No. 6-rated passer in the 15-team league, which is a minor league to Arena League. He completed 143 of 272 passes (53%) for 2,000 yards and 45 touchdowns in 11 games.

Norfolk finished the regular season 10-6 and was seeded No. 4 in the playoffs..

Scott, who played one year at Northridge and was a backup for Portland in the Arena League, set several team records this season, including nine touchdowns, 358 yards passing and 27 completions in one game.

“I have no idea what happened,” Scott said. “The way the thing went down--it was just totally unprofessional. I’ve never been part of something like this my whole career.

“Supposedly, it was something I said against the organization. I never caused any dissension on the team. [My teammates], I’m with them. They’re my favorite team. I hope they take it as far as they can go.”
