Retail developer and arts philanthropist Henry T. Segerstrom, 77, of Newport Beach has remarried, according to friends and family.

He married last weekend in New York, they said. His wife is described as a New Yorker and a mental health professional.

Segerstrom, founding chairman of the Orange County Performing Arts Center and managing partner of C.J. Segerstrom & Sons, owners of South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, called members of his family in Orange County on Friday to tell them the news.

“He sounded like a kid--he’s so happy,” his sister Ruth Ann Moriarty said. Moriarty said the couple met at a social gathering in New York a few weeks ago. Neither was available for comment Saturday.

It is the third marriage for Segerstrom. His wife of nearly 20 years, Renee Segerstrom, died June 7 at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach. She was 72.

Segerstrom, prominent in Orange County arts and social circles, is the scion of a Swedish farming family that built its fortunes by developing into retail and office space land in Costa Mesa and Santa Ana on which it once planted lima beans.

According to his sister, when he met his new wife and she inquired about his line of work, he told her he was a farmer.
