I know I can’t be the only reader who is incredibly offended by the recipe of death offered in this article (“The Roast Pig Project,” July 19). Why not tell the whole story--go whole hog--about how pigs (which are living, feeling, intelligent, breathing animals by the way) meet their brutal end after living, if you want to call it that, an unnatural, shortened life. And for what? A “different and adventurous” party? Tradition? Give me a break.

It is cruel to joke about the killing of pigs and to promote the torture and slaughter of creatures. When we promote the lives of creatures, we are promoting our own lives! People benefit from reading articles teaching them about vegan living, the immense variety of soy products on the market and to promote and respect the lives and rights of all creatures. Your article on roasting a pig is very informative. However, I would like to know if you had ever tasted a pig roasted the Filipino way. The skin would be so crunchy and the meat dipped in a lechon sauce concocted from the pig’s liver will definitely create a smile in your face. Your recipe would produce a roasted pig with a chewy skin, and I’m sure that’s part of the pig that went to waste. Please try lechon. I know you’ll love it.
