Forty-five volunteers rubbed on sunscreen and secured their sunglasses and straw hats before digging in to plant seedlings Saturday at the UC Irvine nursery.

In three hours, more than 600 seedlings for trees such as maples and redwoods were planted in 15-gallon pots. They will eventually offer shade to Orange County neighborhoods.

The event was sponsored by the nonprofit Shade Tree Partnership, UC Irvine, the Irvine Ranch Water District and the National Tree Trust. It contributed to the more than 10,000 trees growing at the Shade Tree Partnership’s nursery at UC Irvine.

When the seedlings are grown in two to four years, the trees will be ready for planting at Orange County’s schools, parks and landscapes.
