Oakland reliever Jason Isringhausen (5-4) spoiled a strong outing by Barry Zito Tuesday night, serving up home run pitches to Bernie Williams and David Justice in the ninth inning of the Yankees’ 4-3 victory in New York.

They were the only pitches Isringhausen threw.

Williams led off the ninth with a drive to right for his 25th homer. Justice followed with his 30th homer, sending the Yankees pouring out of the dugout.

“I thought Bernie’s was just hit hard, and that was a laser that David hit,” Yankee Manager Joe Torre said. “It was a huge lift for us.”

Mariano Rivera (6-3), who loaded the bases in the ninth before getting Adam Piatt to fly out to end the inning, got the win.

New Yankee Jose Canseco was inserted into the lineup as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning and broke his bat on a fly out to right field.

Zito, a left-hander who kept the Yankees off-balance with off-speed pitches, gave up two runs--one earned--and three hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Seattle 12-7, Chicago 4-5--Joel Pineiro gave up two runs and five hits in six-plus innings of his major league debut, sending the Mariners off fast in a doubleheader sweep at Chicago in which Seattle’s Alex Rodriguez homered in both games.

Jay Buhner and Edgar Martinez supported Pineiro with grand slams in the opener. Rodriguez homered off reliever Kevin Beirne and drove in two more runs for the Mariners.

In the second game, Rodriguez hit the longest homer at Comiskey Park this season, and former White Sox Mike Cameron had a two-run double in a five-run fifth inning.

The Mariners have won five in a row and are 21 games above .500 (67-46) for the first time in franchise history.

Texas 11, Cleveland 2--Kenny Rogers (11-9) cooled down the Indians with eight strong innings and Gabe Kapler extended his hitting streak to 22 games for the Rangers, who won at Cleveland.

The Indians had won six in a row.

Detroit 4, Baltimore 1--Juan Gonzalez had a go-ahead two-run double in the fifth inning and Brian Moehler (8-7) struck out seven and scattered eight hits in a complete-game victory at Detroit.

Tampa Bay 5, Minnesota 0--Albie Lopez (9-8) gave up only four hits in his first shutout in six years, giving the Devil Rays a victory at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Lopez has gone at least seven innings in six consecutive starts and in this one benefited by a five-run fifth inning that included John Flaherty’s two-run homer.

Toronto 6, Kansas City 1--Frank Castillo won his eighth consecutive decision and the Blue Jays ended a seven-game road losing streak.

Alex Gonzalez, Mickey Morandini and Brad Fullmer each had three hits for the Blue Jays, who scored two runs in the third on RBI singles by Dave Martinez and Carlos Delgado.
