Hearings to Focus on Navy Exercises

Share

The public is invited to comment on the Navy’s proposal to change some of its warfare exercises in the ocean off Ventura County.

The Naval Air Warfare Center’s weapons division at Point Mugu released a draft environmental impact statement in July describing plans to increase weapons testing, fleet exercises and theater missile defense work in a 36,000-square-mile portion of the Pacific, stretching 200 miles offshore from San Luis Obispo County to near the U.S.-Mexico border.

Five public hearings, including three in Ventura County, are scheduled, each beginning at 6 p.m.

The first is planned for the Oxnard Performing Arts and Community Center on Monday, the second at the Orchid Professional Building, 816 Camarillo Springs Road, in Camarillo on Tuesday, and the last one at the Holiday Inn in Ventura Wednesday.

Additional hearings are scheduled in Santa Barbara Aug. 21 and in Santa Monica Aug. 22.

Details on the sea range and the environmental report are available on a Navy Web site, www.nawcwpns.navy.mil/~pmeis.

A CD-ROM copy of the document and a limited number of paper copies can be obtained by calling (888) 217-9045. Written comments on the proposal are due by Sept. 11. For more information, call (805) 989-1705.
