Sign and Escalators
* LAX has a new entrance with gigantic palm trees lining Century Boulevard and huge lighted columns forming a circle around the new “LAX” letter structure (Aug. 9). Very impressive and, I understand, very expensive! The construction tied up traffic around the airport for months, but they managed to finish in time for the Democratic National Convention.
As a purser for an international airline, I find it very interesting that 50% of the time when my flight arrives, the Department of Airports has the escalators turned off. My airline alone has five international arrivals (747s) between 6 a.m. and noon. Since our flights are generally full, that means 2,000 passengers and approximately 105 crew members, carrying baggage, are forced to walk down flights of stairs. Many of our customers are elderly and families with babies. Can the city of Los Angeles not afford the electricity bill to operate the escalators?
