Amritraj Gets Caught in USTA Semifinals

Fourth-seeded Joshua Cohen of Weston, Fla., staved off four match points in the second set to upset No. 2-seeded Prakash Amritraj of Encino, 5-7, 7-6 (1), 6-2, in the semifinals of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Boys’ 16 Super National Hardcourt Championships on Saturday in Kalamazoo, Mich.

“I had a lot of opportunities,” Amritraj said. “But he played really well to come back and he had a good ‘breaker.”

Amritraj will face Matt Cloer of Linville, N.C., in the third-place match today. Top-seeded Rajeev Ram of Carmel, Ind., beat Cloer, 6-3, 6-2, in the other semifinal.

* Katie Karhohs of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Theresa Logar of Rochester Hills, Mich., defeated Brooke Borisoff of Agoura Hills and Lauren Perl of San Diego, 6-3, 6-3, in the doubles quarterfinals of the USTA Girls’ 16 Super National Hardcourt Championships on Friday at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

FOOTBALL

* Coach David Banuelos of Pierce College said four Brahmas have transferred to four-year schools.

Safety Scott Quigley is headed for Charleston (S.C.) Southern, running back James Augustus to South Dakota, receiver Ben Garnas to New Mexico Highlands and end Al Wiggins to Whittier College.

DIVING

* Troy Dumais of Ventura finished third in the National Outdoor Diving Championships on Saturday at Mission Viejo.

* Umpires are being sought for a fast-pitch softball umpires association being formed in the San Fernando Valley and West Los Angeles areas.

No experience is necessary. Training will be provided.

The group’s first meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday in Sylmar.
