Q: How long is it safe to store water in my earthquake survival kit?

A: That depends on the source of the water. If you are just putting tap water in bottles and sealing it, bacteria in the water can grow over time and spoil the water. A few months is the maximum, unless you do something to sterilize the water first, such as boiling it or adding a disinfectant. Commercial water suppliers, such as Arrowhead, recommend storing their water no more than two years. But if you buy distilled water that is tightly sealed, it should last indefinitely.
