A man driving the wrong way on the Long Beach Freeway caused a three-car accident in which he and three other people were injured, authorities said.

David Hernandez, 21, was driving northbound in southbound lanes of the freeway near Pacific Coast Highway when he crashed head-on into another car about 2:16 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Richard Perez.

Hernandez’s car then spun out and hit another vehicle in the next lane, Perez said.

Hernandez was arrested and faces criminal charges for driving under the influence, Perez said. He and three other people were taken to hospitals with minor to moderate injuries. A 73-year-old woman suffered the worst injuries, with a fractured pelvis and broken ribs.
