Oxnard Airport
Re “Commercial Use of Oxnard Airport,” Ventura County Letters, Aug. 13.
In response to this letter from Bob Kale, I believe that the airport was there first--not the high school, hundreds of encroaching homes or Mr. Kale.
Oxnard Airport is a vital part of the national air transportation infrastructure. It has the only precision instrument landing system between Santa Barbara and Van Nuys. Because fog is a frequent problem in Ventura County and Camarillo Airport is too close to the mountains to allow for an instrument landing system, safety requires this airport to remain open.
Also, the airport has accepted federal funds for operations and improvements, which require that it remain open.
The Oxnard mayor, City Council, school board and NIMBYs all moved there and allowed development with full knowledge of the airport’s location. Because it is they who have encroached upon the airport, I believe it is time for them to vacate their homes and move on.
