Secessionists and the Bond Measure

Share

Re “Secessionists Join Forces Against Bond,” Aug. 8.

As a [San Fernando] Valley resident, I strongly resent Richard Close and the secession group Valley VOTE [Voters Organized Toward Empowerment] campaigning against the much-needed bond issue that would provide additional fire and animal care facilities.

This arrogance, based on an “if come approval” by the Los Angeles voters, seeks to short-circuit services they claim would complicate the secession, which, if passed, would take many years to complete.

In the interval, the residents of Los Angeles (including the Valley) will be denied the much-needed fire stations and paramedics, and hundreds if not thousands of dogs and cats will suffer in the present overcrowded facilities and be prematurely killed to provide room for others to be crowded in to await a similar fate.

In light of this zeal to deny needed services, I wonder about their quest for power and ultimate authority over the Valley.

As a student in high school civics class, I read the Athenian Pledge about leaving my city a better place than I found it. It is obvious that our city would be a better place with more fire protection and more animal shelters.

The secessionists object because it may interfere with their agenda. So the city would be a worse place and then that would provide more arguments for balkanizing the city of Los Angeles?

How selfish can you get?
