Man on Life Support After Car Crash
A 21-year-old Van Nuys man was on life support Sunday after the red Volkswagen in which he was riding smashed into a telephone pole Saturday night on a winding stretch of Laurel Canyon Boulevard.
According to Los Angeles police, Mikah Newkirk Hughes was thrown from the car at a spot just south of Dona Pegita Drive at 10:50 p.m. He was not wearing a seat belt and suffered serious injuries to the head and body.
The car was being driven by Mark Kurayev, 22, of Sherman Oaks, who received a cut on his head.
Two other passengers in the car suffered minor injuries, police said.
Hughes was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.
There was no evidence that the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but he may have been speeding and some passengers were not using seat belts, police said.
No charges had been filed against the driver as of Sunday.
