Woman Killed After Leaving Disabled Car

A woman was killed Sunday night after she and her husband got out of their disabled car on the Riverside Freeway near Weir Canyon Road and she was struck by another vehicle, authorities said.

Virginia T. Gonzales, 48, of Los Angeles was driving eastbound at 8:30 p.m. on the freeway in Anaheim when her car stopped in a traffic lane, California Highway Patrol Officer Michelle DiMaggio said.

“She and her husband both exited the vehicle and ran across the FasTrak lanes into the center divider,” DiMaggio said. “There is a right shoulder, and they chose to go to the center divider.”

The couple made it to the divider safely, but for some reason Gonzales went back to the stranded car. A Ford Excursion traveling 65 to 70 mph struck Gonzales, killing her instantly, DiMaggio said.

The Excursion’s driver, a 40-year-old man from Rolling Hills, was not injured, and no charges are pending against him, investigators said.
