SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO

The 225-year-old Mission San Juan Capistrano will receive reinforcements on a crack in the main sanctuary dome this week.

Pointe Construction of Santa Ana will fit two concrete and reinforced steel beams across the 35-foot-wide, 2-inch-thick crack that dates back to the 19th century.

“It’s kind of like a dental filling,” said John Loomis, project manager for mission conservation.

The great stone church completed in 1806 collapsed after an earthquake in 1812. Staff at the mission was concerned that another minor earthquake would bring down part of the dome.
