Pipe Bomb Halts Traffic Near Camp Pendleton

A pipe bomb was found in the center divider of Interstate 5 on Thursday morning about 10 miles south of Orange County, officials said.
A Caltrans worker found the homemade bomb about 11:30 a.m. near the Las Pulgas Road exit of the freeway, said Officer Tom Kerns of the California Highway Patrol’s Oceanside office.
All freeway lanes were closed in both directions, and traffic was diverted through Camp Pendleton, Kerns said.
The San Diego Sheriff’s Department bomb unit examined the device, determined that it was not a military bomb and detonated it at the scene.
All freeway lanes were open shortly after 1:15 p.m.
