MetroStars’ Mathis Sets Record With Five-Goal Game

Former Galaxy player Clint Mathis set a MLS record with five goals as the New York-New Jersey MetroStars (16-10-3) clinched the Eastern Division title with a 6-4 victory over the Dallas Burn (12-13-4)Saturday night at Dallas before 12,940.
Mathis put the MetroStars ahead early on a through pass by Alex Comas and increased the lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute on a rebound.
Mathis got his third goal in the 40th minute on a pass by Comas. Mathis got his fourth and fifth goals in the 64th and 68th minutes.
Kansas City 1, Colorado 1--The Wizards’ Preki became the first MLS player with 50 goals and 50 assists before 10,109 at Denver. The Wizards are 14-7-8, the Rapids 11-14-4.
New England 2, Columbus 1--Wolde Harris’ goal gave the Revolution (11-11-6) a win over the Crew (11-12-5) before 17,867 at Foxboro, Mass.
D.C. United 2, Miami 1--Raul Diaz Arce scored in overtime as D.C. United (7-16-6) beat the Fusion (10-13-5) before 12,306 at Washington.
Chicago 3, Tampa Bay 3--At Tampa, Fla., Hristo Stoitchkov scored in the 88th minute to help the Fire (13-9-6) tie the Mutiny (15-11-3) before 10,215.
