Irvine police arrested six drunk drivers and made three unrelated arrests at a sobriety checkpoint at Irvine Center Drive and Bake Parkway on Friday night.
About 1,300 cars and trucks went through the checkpoint, where drivers encountered 17 officers, five parking-enforcement officials and 17 volunteers from Mothers Against Drunk Driving and other groups.
The police stopped 392 vehicles and gave 10 sobriety tests. Eight vehicles were cited for other violations.
Traffic Sgt. Denny Jenner said the publicity surrounding these events has a deterrent effect.
