After years of fleeing Washington, whites are slowly returning to the predominantly black U.S. capital, a new Census Bureau report showed Wednesday.

The figures confirm a trend of a growing white population since 1997 despite a net overall population decline since 1990. The numbers are notable in a city where race has historically been a high-profile and sensitive issue.

Although blacks remain the single largest group in the city and still make up the majority overall, the number of blacks in the capital has fallen by about 21% since 1990.

The growth of high-tech businesses in the northern Virginia and Maryland suburbs and in the district itself helped fuel the new prosperity and attract young professionals to the area, analysts said.
