San Diego Police Find Body of Mother, Twin Infants

Police on Wednesday night found the bodies of a 40-year-old woman and her two infant daughters who may have died of neglect after the woman’s death, officials said.

Police spokesman Bill Robinson said officers went to an apartment in the blue-collar Sherman Heights neighborhood east of downtown after neighbors reported that the woman had not been seen for several days.

The woman reportedly had trauma marks on her head but an initial examination by the county medical examiner was unable to determine how she died. An autopsy on all three bodies is scheduled for today.

Police said one infant was found on a couch, another in a bedroom. The children, twins, were 3 to 4 months old.

Police were seeking the man who also lives in the apartment.

Stunned by the deaths, neighbors said they felt guilty that they had not contacted police earlier.

“I feel bad I didn’t do more,” said neighbor Laura Norris.

The woman may not have been seen for a week, police said. When officers arrived, a strong odor was detected from outside the door.

“I’m not looking forward to going back in there,” said a shaken Officer Jim Clark, who discovered the bodies after climbing through a window.
