What’s Next, the Los Angeles Celtics?

Thanks to Mike Penner [Nov. 24] for dredging up old memories of the L.A. Rams’ playoff rivalry with the Minnesota Vikings. Any die-hard Ram fan old enough to remember those games probably felt the chill of Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington while reading Penner’s column. I’ll never forget The Times’ caption below the photograph of a dejected Roman Gabriel after the 1969 loss: “The fall of Roman’s empire.”

I’d rather go without a team here than witness the birth of the Los Angeles Vikings.

The Vikings? Bring ‘em on! Mike Penner must be stuck in some vicious Middle Eastern or Balkan time warp. Forget? Never. Forgive? Don’t be silly. Move on? Not as long as there’s a breath of vengeance left.

Because I can think of no reason not to welcome Randy Moss, Daunte Culpepper, Robert Smith, Cris Carter, Denny Green and the rest with open arms to this town.

So what if the old L.A. Rams couldn’t beat the Vikings? Wouldn’t taking the Super Bowl with a team that is as committed to winning football games as it is to building luxury suites be the sweetest revenge against the Ram-Raider treachery toward the fans here?
