Cloutier Stops Detroit for First Career Shutout

Vincent Lecavalier scored two goals and Tampa Bay held Detroit without a shot in the first period as the Lightning defeated the Red Wings, 3-0, Saturday at Tampa, Fla.

Dan Cloutier made 26 saves and helped preserve his first career shutout by robbing Tomas Holmstrom with a sprawling save in the second period.

Detroit captain Steve Yzerman returned after missing 23 games. He had not played since undergoing arthroscopic surgery Oct. 16 to repair torn right knee cartilage.

Dallas 5, Phoenix 2--Brett Hull scored two goals and Derian Hatcher had three assists in the Stars’ victory over the Coyotes at Phoenix. The Coyotes will get help, though, after signing Claude Lemieux, a free agent who has played on four Stanley Cup championship teams, to a one-year contract.

St. Louis 5, Florida 2--Pierre Turgeon scored two goals and Al MacInnis had four assists to become the top scoring defenseman in team history with 300 points as the Blues extended their unbeaten streak to four games with a victory at St. Louis.

Buffalo 3, Pittsburgh 2--Dominik Hasek gave up two goals in the final two minutes, but the Sabres held off the Penguins at Pittsburgh. Jaromir Jagr scored with 1:35 remaining to spoil Hasek’s bid for his third shutout.

Toronto 8, N.Y Rangers 2--Garry Valk and Jonas Hoglund each scored two goals for the Maple Leafs at Toronto. Dave Manson, Gary Roberts, Mats Sundin and Shayne Corson also scored for the Maple Leafs, who have scored 19 goals in their last three games.

Calgary 1, Montreal 1--Craig Darby scored at 3:14 of the third period to lift the Canadiens into a tie with the Flames at Calgary.

Ottawa 5, Philadelphia 3--Jason York had his first career two-goal game, and Alexei Yashin had three assists to lead the Senators at Kanata, Canada.

Washington 2, Boston 0--Olaf Kolzig made 23 saves for his 18th shutout, and Joe Reekie’s first goal of the season was the game winner for the Capitals at Boston.

Atlanta 2, Columbus 1--Milan Hnilicka stopped 28 shots, including several in the final minute, as the Thrashers extended the Blue Jackets’ losing streak to seven in a game at Columbus, Ohio. Per Svartvadet and Steve Guolla scored for Atlanta. Columbus’ Geoff Sanderson cut the deficit in half with a goal with 8:04 left to play.

Vancouver 5, Edmonton 2--Andrew Cassels had two goals and an assist for the Canucks at Vancouver. Brent Sopel, Trent Klatt and Todd Bertuzzi also scored for the Canucks, who won for only the second time in six games.
