Sharks Rout Flames and Extend Lead

Patrick Marleau scored two goals in the first five minutes of the game and Evgeni Nabokov made 21 saves Monday night as the San Jose Sharks defeated Calgary, 8-0, at Calgary, Canada, and extended the Flames’ home winless streak to 10 games.

Marleau scored 1:48 into the game when he one-timed Niklas Sundstrom’s pass past Mike Vernon on San Jose’s first shot.

Marleau added his second goal three minutes later, and Jeff Friesen made it 3-0 at 10:16.

Marleau set up Sundstrom at 13:43 of the first for a 4-0 lead and chased Calgary goalie Mike Vernon.

Vernon finished with six saves before being replaced by Fred Brathwaite.

Tony Granato, Gary Suter, Alexander Korulyuk, and Marco Sturm also scored for San Jose, which opened a three-point lead atop the Pacific Division over idle Phoenix and Dallas.

Nabokov, a rookie, recorded his second shutout of the season and won his 14th game, second in the league to Colorado’s Patrick Roy (15).

Vancouver 6, Nashville 3--Markus Naslund scored two goals, including the game-winner, as the Canucks defeated the Predators at Vancouver, Canada.

After Peter Schaefer opened the scoring for Vancouver, Naslund made it 2-0 at 4:41 on a wrist shot from just inside the blue line that fooled Nashville goaltender Mike Dunham.

Naslund moved into a tie for the league lead in scoring with 18 goals.

Atlanta 5, Boston 4--Chris Tamer scored with 1:01 left in the third period as the Thrashers defeated the Bruins at Atlanta for their franchise-record third consecutive win.

Boston’s Sergei Samsonov scored two goals in a 2:25 span and tied the game at 4-4 with 3:48 to play.

Tamer won it with his first goal of the season, a slap shot from just inside the blue line.

Florida 4, Toronto 4--Dmitri Yushkevich scored a game-tying goal with 49 seconds left in regulation to rally the Maple Leafs at Toronto.

Toronto’s Tie Domi scored his ninth goal of the season and seventh in his last seven games. Yanic Perreault and Darcy Tucker also scored for the Maple Leafs.
