Hoop Earrings Come Rolling Back Into Style

BALTIMORE SUN

Well, they’re back. Those big, obnoxious hoop earrings in yellow gold. Wouldn’t you know they’d show up the minute most of us finally got around to giving our own collections to kids for dress-up play. And it’s not just the earrings, yellow gold itself is beginning to outshine the subtle silver of the ‘90s.

“We’re seeing a resurgence,” said Renee Wilson, manager of Heirloom Jewels. “It’s a very polished Chanel, New York look. . . . For years [the look] was very delicate, and people are still wearing that, but our customers want these signature pieces that are much bolder. It’s a great suit look.”

And it comes in all sorts of shapes, sizes and prices. Department stores display box after box of hoops and chains, and even discount stores provide a gold selection, many pieces well under $100.

About 90% of Heirloom’s inventory is estate or antique jewelry, which Wilson said has “timeless” appeal. You get what you pay for, she said, and quality pieces start at “at least $700 or $800.” Save your pennies (https://www.heirloomjewels.com).

Splish, Splash

Make bath time a little more interesting without the worry of soaking your favorite book or latest magazine with “Soapdish Editions.” The new series of waterproof bathing books from Chronicle ($7.95) are about the size of a bar of soap. The mini-reads feature recipes for face masks, bubbles and conditioners (“Splish Splash”); relaxation remedies (“Soothing Soaks”) or romantic rendezvous ideas (“Hot & Steamy”), among others.

Uncommon Scents

Got scents of adventure? Try the Perfumers Paintbox from Primal Elements, a California-based, eco-friendly cosmetics company.

Known for its aromatic and visually creative vegetable glycerin soaps, Primal Elements broke out of the soap mold last year to introduce Paintbox, a palette of fragrances that enables you to create a signature scent by blending. Simply brush a finger across the aromatic discs and place the silky powder on a pulse point, layering as you like.

Aromas include wood, musk, citrus, herbal, floral vanilla, champagne and berry.

Notes for the Slopes

The highly reflective surfaces of ice and snow nearly double a person’s exposure to damaging rays. Here are tips from the Skin Cancer Foundation:

* Lips are vulnerable to skin cancer. Choose a lip balm with SPF 15 or higher.

* Sunscreen on your face in the winter helps keep skin moisturized and smooth in the dry air as well as free from ultraviolet rays.

* Rain doesn’t let you off the hook. The sun’s rays penetrate the clouds and can be just as damaging on hazy days as sunny days.
