Frey Hotel Reopens in Palm Springs

One of the first Palm Springs buildings designed by Bauhaus-school architect Albert Frey reopened this month as the Ballantines Movie Colony hotel.

Scottish entrepreneur Fraser Robertson and his English artist wife, Sara Robarts, who operate Ballantines Hotel up the street, said they bought their latest hotel in August after the former owners, who restored and operated it as the Movie Colony Inn from April 1999 to May this year, ran out of money. The building dates to 1935, Robertson added.

The new owners have filled Ballantines Movie Colony with original and reproduction furnishings by mid-century designers. Among the originals: an Eames surfboard table and a Noguchi dining table and chairs. The hotel has 16 rooms, three houses (one with Frey items, one with Danish Modern furnishings and one with ‘50s Hawaiian decor), a pool and a hot tub. Rates are $129 to $395. Tel.
