Texas Scores 135 in Victory Over Centenary

Annissa Hastings scored 22 points and Lindsey Ryan had 19 as No. 16 Texas set a school scoring record against Centenary Saturday in a 135-37 victory at Austin, Texas.

Texas (10-1) broke the scoring record set in a 124-48 victory over Texas-El Paso on Nov. 17, 1978.

The Longhorns led, 135-34, with less than two seconds remaining and nearly managed a 100-point margin, but Centenary’s Louise Smyth made a three-point basket with 1.9 seconds remaining.

No. 20 Louisiana State 62, No. 6 Purdue 55--Marie Ferdinand had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and made the game-winning layup with 39 seconds left as the Tigers (6-3) overcame a 16-point deficit to defeat the Boilermakers (8-3) at Indianapolis.

No. 13 Penn State 84, Pittsburgh 62--Kelly Mazzante scored 32 points, the most ever by a Penn State freshman, as the Lions (6-3) defeated the Panthers (4-4) at Pittsburgh.

Utah 63, No. 14 Oregon 48--Lindsay Herbert scored 19 points and the Utes (9-0) used an early 14-0 run to take control in a victory over the Ducks (4-3) at Salt Lake City.

No. 21 Southwest Missouri State 69, No. 18 Oklahoma 61--Jackie Stiles scored 14 of the last 19 points for the Bears (6-2) to lead them over the Sooners (5-3) at Springfield, Mo.

No. 22 Mississippi State 101, Louisiana Lafayette 68--LaToya Thomas scored 20 points and Cynthia Hall had a triple-double with 12 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds as the Bulldogs (5-2) routed the Ragin’ Cajuns (4-3) at Starkville, Miss., in the first round of the MSU Classic.

Four days after learning that a teammate has Hodgkin’s disease, the Drake women’s basketball team found out Saturday that another teammate has a brain tumor.

In a prayer circle at center court after a 73-58 win over Iowa, Drake Coach Lisa Stone told players and coaches from both teams about freshman Mandy Kappel’s illness. Four days earlier, sophomore forward Martha Chaput told her teammates that she has Hodgkin’s disease, a cancer of the lymph system.
