American Airlines Flight Attendants to Picket at LAX
American Airlines flight attendants say they will put up informational picket lines today at Los Angeles International Airport, John Wayne Airport in Orange County and 17 other airfields across the nation to press demands for a new contract.
The 23,000 flight attendants, who have been working without a contract for more than two years, are locked in a dispute with the nation’s second-largest airline over wages, work rules and retirement benefits.
Earlier this month, the National Mediation Board recessed negotiations indefinitely, citing a lack of progress.
Leslie Mayo, national communications coordinator for the Assn. of Professional Flight Attendants, declined to discuss the figures argued at the negotiating table.
“What we want is a fair and equitable contract,” said union President John Ward. “Clearly, we do not want a strike, but the company must understand this is precisely where we see things heading if American continues along this path.”
The airline did not respond to queries for comment about the picketing.
Airports in San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, New York, Chicago, Washington and Boston are among the others scheduled for picketing.
