Man Arrested in Stabbing of Former Girlfriend at Mall
A man stabbed his ex-girlfriend in the back in a Santa Clarita mall after she told him she was pregnant with his child, sheriff’s deputies said Friday.
“Here is your Christmas present,” Gustavo Ruiz, 22, told Yoshandi Santillan, 26, when he attacked her, deputies said.
Santillan, of Newhall, was treated at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital and was later taken to Olive View Medical Center in Sylmar. Information about her condition was not immediately available.
The attack occurred at the Valencia Town Center mall about 8:20 p.m. Thursday, said Sgt. Dave Stewart of the sheriff’s Santa Clarita station. According to deputies, Santillan was shopping with Ruiz’s family when she saw Ruiz with his current girlfriend. Santillan walked up to the couple and said she was pregnant with Ruiz’s child, deputies said.
The couple left, and about half an hour later Ruiz returned and stabbed Santillan at the mall, deputies said.
Deputies later arrested Ruiz at his home in Newhall. He was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and was being held in lieu of $30,000 bail, Stewart said.
