Problems at the L.A. Zoo

Share

Re “Zoo Struggles With Problem of Gorillas in the Midst of Visitors,” Dec. 18.

Regarding the L.A. Zoo’s need to raise $7 million to create a habitat suitable for its resident gorillas to live (and thrive ) in: Could the zoo possibly raise ticket prices by one dollar and set aside this extra money for the enclosure?

What about posting photos of the squalid enclosures near the existing exhibit, near a bin where visitors could donate money? The zoo could also display these photos in the gift stores and food stands so people could donate their change.

The same type of idea could be carried over into local pet stores, where people sensitive to animal issues could also donate money.

We need to realize that if we want the benefits of a zoo in our city for the education of our children, we have a responsibility to provide clean and suitable living conditions for the animals.

Otherwise, we are simultaneously teaching our children to respect other creatures, but only to the degree that is convenient to do so.
