Two New Sources for Tax Assistance
Orange County taxpayers now have two new outlets that dispense free or low-cost legal assistance with federal tax matters.
The Santa Ana-based Legal Aid Society of Orange County and the Chapman University School of Law in Orange received grants for taxpayer clinics. The money was awarded by the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic grant program, which opened three years ago in Laguna Niguel.
For 2001, grants totaling $6 million were given to 102 accredited academic institutions and nonprofit organizations representing 38 states and the District of Columbia. Organizations operating independent taxpayer clinics can qualify for up to $100,000 in matching funds.
Residents needing assistance to resolve a federal tax dispute can contact Chapman University Law School, 370 N. Glassell St. in Orange at (714) 628-2535 or the Legal Aid Society of Orange County, 902 N. Main St. in Santa Ana at (800) 834-5001.
