Passengers will be able to ride the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s buses, subway and light-rail trains for free on New Year’s Eve--and, on the buses, up to 5 a.m. New Year’s Day.

The free rides begin at 9 p.m. Sunday. The Metro Rail subway and light-rail lines will be free until they close late that night. MTA buses will be free until 5 a.m. Monday.

MTA spokesman Warren Morse said the agency introduced the free program six years ago because of concern about the personal safety of people out celebrating the holiday.

“Hopefully, many will be persuaded to leave their car at home and instead use mass transit, lessening the likelihood of accidents, unwanted injuries and even fatalities,” he said.

Passengers can obtain route and schedule information for buses and trains by calling (800) 266-6883 or by visiting the MTA’s Web site--https://www.mta.net. The MTA will operate on a Sunday schedule on New Year’s Day.

Metrolink commuter trains will operate on their regular Sunday schedule New Year’s Eve. There will be no Metrolink service New Year’s Day.
