Pedestrian Struck on PCH Critically Hurt

A man was in extremely critical condition late Wednesday after being struck by a car while crossing Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach, authorities said.

Police said the man, who appeared to be in his 40s but was unconscious and had not yet been identified, was crossing at Brookhurst Street about 7 p.m. when he was hit by a westbound 1987 Honda driven by a 25-year-old Mission Viejo resident.

“Preliminary witness statements indicate that the driver was traveling through the intersection on a green light and that speed and alcohol were not factors,” said Sgt. Craig Bryant, a spokesman for the Huntington Beach Police Department. “We don’t see any fault of the driver. He was interviewed and released.”

The victim was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange with head trauma, two broken legs and unknown internal injuries, Bryant said. The cause of the accident is under investigation, he said.
