Wild Continues Upset Streak With Victory Over Red Wings

The Minnesota Wild added the Detroit Red Wings to their list of recent impressive victories.

Sean O’Donnell’s first goal of the season midway through the second period was the eventual winner for Minnesota, which held on to defeat Detroit, 5-3, Wednesday night at Detroit.

The Wild extended its unbeaten streak to four. Minnesota defeated Dallas and the Kings around a tie with Ottawa.

“We play a simple game,” said Stacy Roest, who had two assists for the Wild. “It doesn’t matter who we play, we just go out and try to work harder than the other team and try to execute our system better than them.”

Detroit got two first-period goals from Sergei Fedorov, only to have its home record slip to 10-9-1-2--including 4-4-1-2 against teams .500 or below.

Manny Legace was riding a six-game unbeaten streak. But after giving up four goals on 16 shots in the first two periods, Detroit Coach Scotty Bowman pulled him in favor of Chris Osgood.

Washington 5, Ottawa 1--Peter Bondra scored four goals--three in the second period--at Kanata, Canada, to lead the Capitals.

Dmitri Khristich also scored in the second as the Capitals turned around a 1-0 deficit and chased Senator goalie Patrick Lalime. Adam Oates had three assists in the period.

Washington remained undefeated in its last four games (3-0-1) and the Capitals have nine wins in 12 games, including a 7-1-1 mark in their last nine.

Philadelphia 5, Florida 2--Five players scored goals to lead the Flyers at Sunrise, Fla.

Flyer goalie Roman Cechmanek made 31 saves and posted his third consecutive victory. He’s 5-0-1 in his last six games.

Boston 5, New York Islanders 2--Bill Guerin scored two goals to increase his league lead goal total to 23 and Jason Allison added three assists as the Bruins won at Uniondale, N.Y.

New Jersey 2, Columbus 2--Jason Arnott scored on a power play with 69 seconds left in the third period to give the Stanley Cup champion Devils a tie at East Rutherford, N.J.

Randy McKay also scored for the Devils, who hit three goal posts in the third period before Arnott scored on a great setup by Patrik Elias.

Vancouver 3, Montreal 2--Felix Potvin stopped 20 shots at Vancouver, Canada, and Markus Naslund scored his 20th goal as the Canucks ended a three-game losing streak. Montreal lost its third consecutive and has just one victory in 11 games.

Colorado 3, Edmonton 2--Milan Hejduk and Adam Foote scored third-period goals and Ray Bourque had two assists at Denver as the Avalanche won for the third time in four games.

Carolina 4, New York Rangers 3--Martin Gelinas scored two power-play goals and assisted on Rob DiMaio’s winner at Raleigh, N.C.

Carolina center Rod Brind’Amour injured his leg and will be sidelined at least two weeks.

Chicago 1, Phoenix 1--Phoenix’s Sean Burke stopped 24 shots and Chicago’s Jocelyn Thibault made 18 saves as the Coyotes and Blackhawks skated to a tie at Chicago.

Columbus put defensemen Mattias Timander and Frantisek Kucera on the injured list and recalled defenseman Radim Bicanek and center Bill Bowler from Syracuse of the American Hockey League. . . . Right wing Jamie Langenbrunner of the Dallas Stars will have surgery today to repair a lower abdominal strain. Langenbrunner will miss about two months. . . . Michael Peca, sitting out the NHL season because of a contract dispute, strained his groin during his first shift with Canada in the Spengler Cup at Davos, Switzerland. The former Buffalo Sabres’ captain did not return to the game.
