Share

Have something important that needs to be postmarked by Dec. 31? Better get it mailed by Saturday, since that will be the last day for a year 2000 postmark.

Because Dec. 31 falls on a Sunday this year, mail that needs to be postmarked by the end of the year has to be at the post office by Saturday. Mail dropped in mailboxes Sunday will receive a Jan. 2, 2001, postmark date.

Items such as scholarship applications and business licenses, often need to be postmarked by Dec. 31.

“There are an incredible number of things that people want postmarked by Dec. 31,” U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman Terri Bouffiou said. “Because Dec. 31 falls on a Sunday, we think there might be some problems this year for people.”

The only Southern California post office open on New Year’s Eve is near Los Angeles International Airport at 9029 Airport Blvd., three blocks north of Century Boulevard. It will close at 8 p.m. Sunday and reopen at 4 a.m. Tuesday.
