After slugging it out for 40 minutes on the court, Tennessee and George Washington carried their hostilities over to a postgame pizza party.

With the crowd long gone from the Stan Sheriff Center after the No. 6 Volunteers’ 91-81 victory on Thursday night in the Rainbow Classic at Honolulu, the teams were supposed to enjoy a friendly pizza party in a hospitality room.

What ensued was a near free-for-all with a lot of pushing and shoving and yelling and screaming. No one was injured, but a cameraman had his equipment broken.

“The other team came down to our locker-room area after the game,” George Washington Coach Tom Penders said. “Most of our kids were on the bus when all that stuff happened. I think they handled themselves. All they did was defend themselves.”

That’s not the story Tennessee Coach Jerry Green related.

Green said he briefly saw Penders after the scuffle. “He pointed to one of our kids and said something like ‘You got a problem with him,’ ” Green said. “It wasn’t to sit down for a meaningful conversation.”

Green said the incident started when two of his players who had gone to pick up the food were jumped by George Washington players.
