The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to post a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for defacing the area’s only synagogue.

The motion, introduced by Supervisor Mike Antonovich, also instructs the county Human Relations Commission to investigate the desecration and offer assistance to the congregation.

Vandals last month scrawled swastikas, pentagrams and anti-Semitic messages on the Congregation Beth Knesset Bamidbar synagogue on East Avenue J.

“This strikes at the heart of our community,” Antonovich said of the incident. The board also approved a motion by Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke asking the Human Relations Commission to examine racial tensions between African American and Latino students at several high schools in Hawthorne and Lawndale. The commission is to report its findings to the board within 45 days.
