Meetings on School District Reorganization Underway

Los Angeles school officials are holding a series of public briefings this month on interim Supt. Ramon C. Cortines’ plan to reorganize the district into 11 subdistricts.

The meetings began Wednesday at Monroe High School in Sepulveda and at Carson High School.

About 60 parents, teachers and other school district employees attended the session at Monroe, posing dozens of written questions that will be given to Cortines for consideration as he develops his concept paper into a more detailed plan. The Board of Education is scheduled to vote on the proposal April 11.

The reorganization would leave the district under a single board of education and a general superintendent, but transfer many of the central office staff to new, largely autonomous subdistricts.

The concept paper is available on the district’s Internet Web site at www.lausd.k12.ca.us.

At Monroe, several people in the audience complained about poor notice of the meetings and lack of detail in the concept paper. They asked that more meetings be held after the plan is completed.

Upcoming meetings, to be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m., are:

Wednesday: Francis Polytechnic High School, 12431 Roscoe Blvd., Sun Valley, and Jordan High School, 2265 E. 103rd St., Los Angeles.

Thursday: Wilson High School, 4500 Multnomah St., Los Angeles, and Dorsey High School, 3537 Farmdale Ave., Los Angeles.
