City Manager Arthur C. Simonian was deposed Thursday by the city, which is suing him to recover bonus money that officials say he took without authorization. The deposition took place at the Newport Beach office of Simonian’s attorney, Craig Scott. Simonian was fired by the City Council in September for alleged financial malfeasance, but was reinstated by a judge who ruled that the City Council did not follow proper procedure in terminating him. Simonian, who has denied wrongdoing, is now on paid administrative leave. The city is suing Simonian to recover about $300,000 in bonuses that Simonian allegedly paid himself without the council’s authorization. Simonian has in turn sued the city seeking his job back. An evaluation conference will be set following the deposition, after which a hearing date will be set.
